Why We Have the Skin Type We Have.

It’s another beautiful day and we at MSC are so grateful to see this wonderful weekend and new month with you.
Today, we would be digging a little deeper to know the various reasons why we have the skin type we have;

·         First we have the oily skin (medically known as seborrhea) due to excess skin oil produced within the pores. Hormones and genetics also add up to having an oily skin, during puberty and other life events, fluctuating hormones (such as androgens that are males’ hormones) present in both males and females signals the maturation of the skin’s sebaceous glands which increases the oil production on the skin. These androgens are considered one of the top causes of oily skin, the higher the androgens present, the more sebum is funneled through the pores which then sits on the surface of the skin creating an oily sheen.

If this excess oil becomes trapped in the pore and combine with dead skin cells and bacteria on the surface of the skin and inside the pore; pimples, blackheads and other blemishes would form. In most acne patients, the reaction to hormonal changes is dependent on genes and hormones.

·         The dry skin can be caused by external and internal factors such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, malnutrition and atopic dermatitis. External factors are the underlying cause and the easiest to address, they include; cold temperature, low humidity especially during the winter when central heaters are used, over washing with harsh soaps, overuse of sanitizers and lipid solvents (alcohol). Internal factors include overall health, age, genetics, family history and a personal history of other medical conditions like atopic dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. This skin type can also be caused by some medications we take such as those for high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, allergy, and acne.

The dry skin is particularly common on the hands, feet, arms and lower legs although it can happen anywhere.

·         The sensitive skin can be caused by the dry skin when the skin becomes too dry and losses much oil and water. This can cause the skin to itch, scale or flake, crack and bleed, appear red or ashy-looking.

·         The combination skin is majorly caused by genetics, environment, hormones, and stress.
